Restaurant IDEAL -History-

DEAL Restaurant was founded in 1840 in Unió street in the heart of what today is the popular Raval neighbourhood in Barcelona´s city centre. The images that we keep from back then are among the first ones taken in the city. They were made by a photographer, who came specifically from Marseille (France). In that memorable occasion customers and neighbours collaborated, kindly sitting still for hours until finally they managed to obtain a good picture, where nobody had moved, or almost anybody as it was proved later!

Restaurant IDEAL

Many generations have passed, both behind and in front of the counter doing their singular lives. Merchants and shopkeepers who came to have ‘carajillos’ were followed by sailors of ‘6th fleet’ during World War II, who taught us how to make good ‘Ham n’ eggs’ Finally, students of Drama, political activist groups, artists of cabaret, employees of the ‘Deputation’ people of all kinds that got lost (or that found themselves) in the the streets of the ‘raval’ formed the heterogeneous and var-ied clientele of the last Ideal Restaurant located at Unió street. In the year 1995 we had to move because of the expansion of the Gran Teatro del Liceo to our new location in La Rambla 41, right in front of the popular Plaza Real. There the Restaurant, once again, adapted to a new clientele with new characteristics and new expectations. ‘Las Ramblas’ in Barcelona, that initially was a river of water, literally turned into nowadays river of people. It was normal then for this unique scenery to transmit its cosmopolitan force to the new Ideal.

The old Ideal-Bar

Who would have thought then, that those kind portraits at the old Ideal-Bar would survive the pass of time the way they did, being attentive witnesses of the changes that the city of Barcelona went through . The Ideal-Bar, now Ideal Restaurant and bar, saw his-torical changes happen, from political regimes to wars, post wars, rationings, persecutions ... It has also served all kinds of people, famous ones like the Spanish flamenco singer “Lola Flores”, who used to come accompanied by her husband ‘El Pescadilla’ and her agent, back when the neighbouring Hotel Orient was the Hotel of the ‘Bullfighters’. Later on, other ‘Stars’ from the Liceu Opera House became regular guests at our Restaurant, being it so close to the theatre. The French choreographer Maurice Béjart or the Argentinean dancer, Alicia Alonso... are some of the names we remember. However, the Ideal Restaurant has also lived through the other history, not only the one of the public figures.

El Ideal”

The restaurant’s new location, in the centre of the city and the characteristics of the premises, located in a two story building with large rooms for groups, meetings, etc ... .in the upper floor and barcafeteria in the lower floor, besides from a beautiful open air terrace in La Rambla available all year around, make “El Ideal” a great location for any occasion That is why in our gastronomic suggestions you will find typical specialities of the Mediterranean cuisine like the popular Paella, with an interesting number of variations, the fish and seafood zarzuela, but also all kinds of pasta and salads or combined dishes and pizzas. And to finish your meal...what bet-ter than a homemade ice cream or a cake!
